  1. In English history, one of the Presbyterian
  2. Christians who swore to uphold their forms of
  3. worship in a National
  4. Covenant, signed 28 Feb 1638, when Charles I
  5. attempted to introduce a liturgy on the
  6. English model into Scotland. A general
  7. assembly abolished episcopacy, and in 1643
  8. the Covenanters signed with the English
  9. Parliament the Solemn League and Covenant,
  10. promising military aid in return for the
  11. establishment of Presbyterianism in England.
  12. A Scottish army entered England and fought at
  13. Marston Moor 1644. At the Restoration Charles
  14. II revived episcopacy in Scotland, evicting
  15. resisting ministers, so that revolts followed
  16. in 1666, 1679, and 1685. However,
  17. Presbyterianism was again restored in 1688.
